GitHub announced on July 2, 2026 that Copilot agent session streaming is in public preview. GitHub Enterprise Cloud customers with enterprise managed users can now access Copilot agent session data across clients, including cloud agents on github.com, data resident deployments on ghe.com, Copilot CLI, VS Code, Visual Studio, and partner IDEs such as JetBrains and Eclipse.
The focus is observability. GitHub says enterprises can see agent session activity such as prompts, responses, and tool calls. In other words, as AI agents start doing multi-step work inside IDEs, CLIs, and cloud environments, administrators get a way to bring those activities into governance and audit workflows.
There are two access paths. A streaming endpoint can be configured from audit log settings to send session data automatically to an event collector or SIEM tool. Microsoft Purview is also available as a supported endpoint in public preview. The REST API gives enterprise owners an on-demand path through GET /enterprises/{enterprise}/copilot/usage-records, covering the last 48 hours of session data.
This matters because the risk of AI agents is not only whether the model gives a correct answer. It is what steps the agent took, what content it read, which tools it called, and what changes it suggested. Without session-level telemetry, enterprises can see outcomes but struggle to trace causes or produce security and compliance evidence.
For engineering teams, the feature pushes agent adoption from personal productivity toward managed operations. When prompts, responses, and tool calls can enter a SIEM or audit pipeline, security, platform, and engineering leaders can monitor agent activity, unusual usage, sensitive operations, and incident investigations through familiar controls.
The signal in Copilot agent session streaming is that AI coding agents are entering the enterprise observability stack. Adoption maturity will not only be about model capability or active users. It will also depend on whether a company can measure, retain, analyze, and govern the record of agent work.
