GitHub announced on July 7, 2026 that the GitHub Copilot app is available on every Copilot plan. On the surface, this is an availability update. The larger shift is that agent-driven development is moving from IDE extensions and cloud coding agents into a dedicated desktop workflow.
The Copilot app lets developers start agent sessions from the desktop. GitHub says it is available on macOS, Windows, and Linux, and now supports every Copilot plan, including Copilot Free and GitHub Education. Agent sessions are no longer reserved for higher-tier plans or enterprise previews. They are becoming a mainstream developer surface.
The other important detail is BYOK. Even without a Copilot subscription, users can bring their own key and run sessions against their own model provider. That changes the app from a single-subscription feature into a more flexible agent workstation. For teams, it creates more room for model choice, procurement control, and cost management.
GitHub still keeps an enterprise policy boundary. To use the Copilot app on Copilot Business or Copilot Enterprise, an organization or enterprise admin must enable Copilot CLI in policy settings. That matters because desktop agents can become operationally powerful. Wider availability does not remove the need for administrator control.
In practice, this kind of app changes the entry point for development work. A developer can put bug fixing, issue cleanup, pull request creation, test repair, or refactoring into a session instead of asking for line-by-line help inside an editor. The value of an agent session is that it can retain task state, tool context, and execution traces, making delegated engineering work more natural than a traditional chat.
The key takeaway is not simply that there is another app to download. GitHub is pushing Copilot from coding assistant toward desktop agent workspace. The next enterprise question is not only who can install the app. It is which repositories, models, tokens, permissions, and automation tasks can safely be handled by agent sessions.
