On September 16, 2026, OpenAI announced a set of new ChatGPT Ads capabilities designed to make advertising more conversational and campaign work easier for businesses. The update includes tests of Sponsored Agents, natural-language campaign creation in ChatGPT Work, new AI creative tools in Ads Manager, and integrations with HubSpot and Shopify.
Sponsored Agents are the most important product change. After seeing a relevant ad, a user can choose to start a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent, ask follow-up questions, and visit the business website when ready. OpenAI says this conversation is separate from ChatGPT’s independent answers and from the user’s original conversation. The test is currently limited to select advertisers in the United States.
For marketing teams, the shift is from sending someone straight to a landing page to supporting a product-discovery conversation first. A shopper might ask about fit, features, usage, or tradeoffs, while the business can provide context within a sponsored surface. A longer conversation is not automatically stronger intent, however, so teams still need to measure downstream conversion, quality, and opt-outs.
OpenAI also lets advertisers create, update, and analyze campaigns in ChatGPT using natural-language prompts. The Ads Manager plugin can turn a website or brief into a campaign, explain performance, and recommend next steps. Ads Manager can suggest copy and imagery based on a landing page and campaign objective, but advertisers review and edit those suggestions before deciding whether to add them to a campaign.
An optional AI-powered text customization feature can adapt existing headlines and descriptions to the context of a conversation and translate copy into a user’s preferred language. That may help with cross-market content, but it also makes brand voice, claims, translation quality, and required disclosures ongoing review responsibilities. Automatically generated variants should not bypass approval.
The announcement also connects ChatGPT Ads to existing business tools. HubSpot users can connect a ChatGPT Ads account, create ads, track performance, and follow up on leads. U.S.-based Shopify merchants can use a ChatGPT Ads app with products integrated through Shopify Catalog; international availability is planned from September 23 in markets where ChatGPT Ads is available.
The broader signal is that AI marketing is moving from generating a piece of copy toward connecting discovery, questions, campaign creation, analysis, and follow-up. That makes user trust more central. A Sponsored Agent needs to remain visibly distinct from independent answers, while data scope, recommendation logic, referrals, and any transaction-related action should be understandable. OpenAI’s announcement is a vendor description, not independent evidence of conversion or revenue impact.
A controlled rollout treats a Sponsored Agent as a bounded conversational entry point rather than an autonomous salesperson. Teams can limit the product knowledge it may use, require human approval for offers and commitments, record the path from conversation to site and conversion, provide an exit route, and separate CRM permissions from ad-content permissions. Shorter workflows still need transparency and traceability.
